I love looking at the landscape, the colors the terrain but it is difficult to capture that with such a limited palette.
Everything about it is like the flip side of the Northeast. It seems to barren so devoid of lushness and color. When you really look at it though it has it's own rugged, start beauty and the colors of the desert can be just as intense as the color of a forest.
This 5x7 shows the plain brownness of the desert with the complex colors of the hills in the distance.
I was out of my comfort zone in a few ways. For some reason I thought it would be better to use acrylics, not so and I had no idea Cubism would be so restrictive to me!! You have to color inside the lines, which is not good for me.
Cubism is breaking down a subject to a basic geometric form and painting it in a flat manner. I picked two very round subjects thinking that would make an interesting contrast.
This is what a dish of pears and a teapot looked to me in a Cubist style.
It is painted from a photo I took looking across the marsh in Ipswich, MA. A beautiful place with a beautiful coastal area.
I think of the phrase "through a lens lightly" when I look at this. It seems to be all suggestion with hints of homes, sand, water and the beautiful green of the hills.
I thought I was over my teapot mania but I guess not. What is it about that round, plump little shape that so intrigues me? I know that teapots come in all shapes and sizes but the cubby little round ones are my favorite.
I painted this little 5x7 for a group challenge where we could use only red, blue yellow and white. I used a beautiful mixture of all those colors to make the background, that was the challenge.
This 5x7 oil was painted from a photo that a fellow artist took for a challenge we did. The challenge was to take turns picking a photo and each do our interpretation of that photo. It is always fun to see how different each person sees something and the creation that comes from that vision.
At first I tried to be realistic in my painting but it just didn't seem right. I wanted to be looser and freer, just like the flower was.
I wanted to do a painting in just 4 colors, Red, Blue, Yellow and White. Limiting your colors is a great exercise because it forces you to mix colors and experiment.
I really do love all kinds of art and all kinds of paintings on all kinds of mediums. I especially like paintings that look different. They are usually of ordinary things but just a little off because of the what materials are used or what they are painted on.
I wanted to do a farm scene but I wanted it to look muted and use almost dull colors. I think I did that with this 9x12 oil but as you see I had to put a touch of some color in there!!
This is a farm nestled in a "holla" ? in North Carolina.
I never get tired of painting ocean scenes. No matter how many I do, they are all different. I painted this 5x7 oil from a photo I took off the coast of Gloucester, MA. The day was clouding up, the temperature was dropping. The ocean turned such a deep blue, it was beautiful.
I had not been in many years but there is nothing like a 70 degree day in the fall with the leaves just starting to change and a gaggle of three year olds to get you out there. Not only was the day delicious but so was the cider and cider doughnuts.
I took lots of photos and hope to do several paintings from today but in the meantime I have this sweet little apple painting to remind me of the day.
She lives inland from the coast about an hour and a half. The terrain there is a lot like Tucson Arizona. It has some hills, trees, dessert and the temperature is just about the same with warmer days and cool nights.
One of the things she loves about being there is the lemon groves. She has one right next to the house she is living in.
I created this sunny little collage for her to take back with her just to make her smile. I used a photo from a painting I had done of lemons.
We were to paint a black bird without using any black. I was o.k. with the original but when I looked at it for a few more days I realized I really wasn't happy with it.
I wanted the bird itself to be bigger, to be rougher, to be more unformed and feathery. I really didn't want a tight bird painting but a loose, suggestive one. So, this is what I came up with.
He is fuller, looser and has an attitude. That is what I originally missed.
This time however I decided to do a landscape. When I was working on it I concentrated on one area at a time and it was only when I was nearly finished that I stood back and really looked at the whole picture. The piece looked like the photo but yet it didn't?
Hmm I think you have to decide for yourself. Does it look like a marsh scene with a sky, trees and bushes, marsh, water and water with a cloud reflection or does it have a much more abstract feel to it?
If I didn't tell you what it was what would you think it was?
I am pretty lazy about them though. I usually fuss around forever trying to set something up and am never happy. It is so much better if someone just says paint this!
I painted this at an Elio workshop. He always has several pieces in a set up and I usually pick a few things or an area I like and paint that. For me the simpler the better. At the time this seemed a simple set up but the creamer has a difficult shape and position. Also the creamer and mug were white so all of the color had to come from the background and table cloth. I used as much shadowing as possible to keep it interesting. It turned out to be one of my favorite pieces.
I used Van Gogh's "Wheatfield with crows" as an inspiration for two reasons. First so many people know it and secondly I have always been fascinated with the way you can paint a squiggly line in the sky and it is suddenly a bird. Everyone who sees it knows it is a bird, yet it is just a V shaped line.
I decided to try Wheatfield as a collage. I used a lot of busy papers because that is Van Gogh to me. Motion, movement, color. The birds are not black but are musical notes and written or printed paper. They fly through the air carrying messages of song, love, hope.
I came across a medium new to me called alcohol inks. They were so much fun and quite a welcome change from oils or collage. I found the experience frustrating but very freeing. You really cannot control much except for the colors you use.
The paint has to used on a smooth surface so it slips and slides. You can control where it goes by moving the tile or using alcohol to try and direct the flow. Sort of like herding cats. I really enjoyed it once I realized that most of it was out of my hands. It was fun putting colors together than trying to guess what I had created. You can also use stamps or anything else you have lying around to give it interest.
Here are three very different tiles.
So, I was intrigued by this old church in an old Florida neighborhood. It looked like several buildings were put down and then attached to each other. I couldn't help think of a child's set of wooden blocks.
I have a hard time translating all the wonderful nooks, crannies and lived in character that I see in buildings onto my canvas. I usually paint farm houses, out buildings, sheds, or barns that are not the main focus of the painting. I decided to just paint the wonderful shapes and see what happened.
The church was all white but I liked the idea of having each section a different color just to see what kind of vibe it would give off.
The result isn't to everyone's taste but I am happy.
Because Gloucester is such a busy place in the summer there always seem to be boats so getting photos without a boat or two or three is rare.
Gloucester has an interesting harbor because there is an island pretty close to land called Ten Pound Island. Legend has it the island got it's name because that is how much the settlers paid the local Indians for it or that is how many sheep pens or pounds it could hold. There has been a Lighthouse on the island since the early 1800's and one of it's claims to fame is that Winslow Homer stayed with the Lighthouse keeper and his family one summer producing about 50 paintings of the harbor.
I took this photo of some small sailboats racing towards the island. It was very windy and the boats looked so small heading towards those big rocks but yet it did not seem dangerous. I could not help painting this photo in a whimsical way.
On the right in the bottom photo is the Lighthouse.
Something that is somehow a little special, maybe even so special you hope no one buys it? And, if no one buys it for long enough you can keep it?
My little collage Lionfish was just like that. I don't know what it was but I just loved it. I loved planning it, creating it, looking at it, showing it off and having it in the house. I was very sad to see it go and I may have not let it go if a special person hadn't asked to buy it. So, even though I did not want to sell it I did part with it as a gift because I knew the person who wanted it loved it as much as I did. Besides he is residing in The Keys!!

There’s a story about perfectionism in David Bayles and Ted Orland’s excellent book, Art & Fear:

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pound of pots rated an “A”, forty pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot — albeit a perfect one — to get an “A”. Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work – and learning from their mistakes — the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

What is so intimating about facing a blank screen or a blank canvas. They hold the same terror for me. I get busy with my life so I stop blogging and stop painting, Then, I use the excuse that I haven't done anything for awhile not to start again.
I just read this in Austin Kleon's weekly newsletter and it sums it all up for me. It goes along with the theory of 10,000. If you do something enough times you will get good at it!!!
So, just do it.
Fingers crossed for another try at blogging and creating.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8144259389496429709.post-17475807460831734942017-11-05T03:00:00.000-08:002017-11-05T03:00:17.106-08:00Lemons RedouxThis week I was in a collage frame of mind. I wanted to start using some of the wonderful papers I have been hoarding but to start off slowly because it has been awhile. Going through completed, started, half done and never to be finished projects I found this great little photo of a painting I had done of lemons. What would it be like to have an oil painting, a photo and a collage of the same subject??? Well here are the results.
The top is the completed collage, then a detail and lastly the collage with the photo on top.
I usually try collaging or even pourings using acrylics but I have discovered something new alcohol inks. I know these are not new but they are to me and I have been enjoying them for a few weeks now.
I am mostly using tiles and yupo paper right now. I tried photo paper but did not have as much luck. I feel like they really need a smooth surface even with the flow medium. I did a few tiles that I liked using the same color combinations.

On this one I tried stamping the tile after the ink was partially dry. It was semi successful but I need a lot more practice.

With this tile I used flow medium and let the ink move around while I moved the tile in different directions. I also used a lot of spray alcohol to make the small spots.

With this tile I tried putting alcohol on the tile and adding inks to an area at a time. This one reminds me of a landscape with a sky, trees and a lake.

This is a lot of fun and very relaxing. It allows you to let loose in a creative way.
Many artists paint large pieces over long periods of time. Some smaller pieces that can be painted in less than an day or even hours. I am the kind of painter that likes to finish a piece as soon as possible, I am impatient and can't seem to focus on one subject for long periods. I can do series of paintings on the same subject but not the same piece, hmmm. I don't know what that says about me but that is just how it is.
This is a painting I did in a workshop and took me awhile to finish it. I really like the detail and results of this painting and would love to do some bigger pieces like this again but I think I need to be in a structured setting to do it.
I have been playing around with alcohol inks lately and doing a lot of abstract which is all color. I have been enjoying it but I wanted to do a quick little oil with some definite shape but still mostly color. I immediately thought of Cezanne and how much I love his work.
One photo is the finished piece and the other shows the photo I was working from.
Here is a little 5x7 homage to Cezanne.
I wanted to make something for his room that she would like and he would like looking at as he got older. I did this little collage of a ewe and her lamb. To me they symbolized new beginnings in the sweetest way. Here is to new beginnings.
Unless you are exposed to his photographs or love historical furniture his name is not well known. I came across his unique art form when I was thumbing through a box of old photographs and postcards. They were quite old, before the era of color photography yet they were so colorful, they almost looked otherworldly. Most were just blank but a few had the signature Wallace Nutting on them. After doing a little research I discovered that he was a pioneer of hand colored photography.
He was a minister who retired in his early 40's because of ill health. He had two hobbies, photography and bicycling. He combined the two, taking many photographs of the New England countryside. He hand colored them to make them more interesting using oil paints, solvents, small brushes and solvents. They became so popular at his peak he had 200 "colorists" working for him.
I used his method to do some hand colored photos on my own. It is a long time consuming process but the end result can be really special.
This is one of my favorites. If you zoom in you can see where the color is applied.
